Often, when conflict erupts in a relationship it is mishandled in a variety of ways:

  • It is simply ignored or denied.
  • The conflict is exaggerated beyond reasonable proportions.
  • One party or another to the conflict is disproportionately blamed for the conflict or held responsible for its resolution.

The resolution of the conflict is seen as a "win-lose" situation where one person "wins" the conflict at the other person’s expense

Win-Win Model

Conflict Management is based on a mediation or "win-win" model of conflict resolution where conflicts are:

  • Brought into the open as soon as is appropriate after they are identified.
  • Looked at as objectively and as operationally as possible.
  • Viewed as the results of mutual misunderstandings or differences.
  • Accepted as the mutual responsibility of both parties to resolve.
  • Seen as situations where both parties must benefit in some way in order for resolution agreements to be long lasting and effective.
