Often, when conflict erupts in a relationship it is mishandled in a variety
of ways:
- It is simply ignored or denied.
- The conflict is exaggerated beyond reasonable proportions.
- One party or another to the conflict is disproportionately blamed for the
conflict or held responsible for its resolution.
The resolution of the conflict is seen as a "win-lose" situation where
one person "wins" the conflict at the other persons expense
Win-Win Model
Conflict Management is based on a mediation or "win-win" model of
conflict resolution where conflicts are:
- Brought into the open as soon as is appropriate after they are identified.
- Looked at as objectively and as operationally as possible.
- Viewed as the results of mutual misunderstandings or differences.
- Accepted as the mutual responsibility of both parties to resolve.
- Seen as situations where both parties must benefit in some way in order for
resolution agreements to be long lasting and effective.
